Pickleball Rules

Recreational League (All Levels)
Self-Referee with Brand Ambassador Support

Summary:

  • Self-Referee: Players make their own calls. A Brand Ambassador is available for rule clarification.
  • Game Setup: Two players from each team must start the game.
  • Match Format: Best of 5 games within 60 minutes (check league details for specific timing).
  • Roster: Teams with more than two players can rotate on a serve or alternate games. All rostered players in attendance must play at least once within the designated time frame.
  • Brand Ambassador: Present to clarify rules but not act as a referee.

Game and Match Rules:

60-Minute Matches:

  • A game is completed when one team reaches 11 points and leads by at least two points.
  • If tied at 10-10, play continues until one team wins by two points, with a cap at 15 (e.g., at 14-14, the next point wins).
  • Players switch sides after each game.

Serving Rules:

  • Only one serve attempt per player unless it is a "let" serve (serve hits the net but lands in the correct service court, then replayed).
  • The score must be announced before serving (server’s score first).
  • Each team member serves once before switching the serve to the other team.
  • The right-side player serves first.
  • After scoring, the server switches sides.

Faults in Serving:

  • Serving into an incorrect area.
  • Hitting the ball out of bounds (sidelines and baseline are in play).
  • Volleying before the ball has bounced once on each side.
  • Hitting the ball into the net or touching the net with the paddle/body.
  • Hitting the ball before it bounces in the non-volley zone.
  • Stepping into the non-volley zone while volleying.
  • Stepping on/over the non-volley zone line during a follow-through.
  • Missing the ball when attempting to hit it.

Basic Rules (USA Pickleball):

  • Format: Played as doubles (two players per team).
  • Court Dimensions: 44’ long x 20’ wide (same for singles and doubles).

The Serve:

  • The server's arm must move in an upward arc.
  • Paddle contact must be below waist level.
  • The paddle head must not be above the wrist at contact.
  • Drop Serve: Allowed, where above rules do not apply.
  • The server must have at least one foot behind the baseline.
  • Serve is diagonal and must land within the opposite court.

Serving Sequence:

  • Both players serve until a fault is committed.
  • First serve of each side-out starts from the right/even court.
  • If a point is scored, the server moves to the left/odd court.
  • This pattern continues until a fault occurs.
  • In singles, the server serves from the right/even court when their score is even and from the left/odd court when it is odd.

Scoring:

  • Only the serving team can score points.
  • 60-Minute Matches: A game ends at 11 points with a two-point lead (cap at 15 points).

Two-Bounce Rule:

  • The receiving team must let the serve bounce before returning it.
  • The serving team must also let the return bounce before playing it.
  • After both bounces occur, either team can volley or play off a bounce.

Non-Volley Zone (The Kitchen):

  • Extends 7 feet from both sides of the net.
  • Volleying within the non-volley zone is prohibited.
  • A player stepping into the zone while volleying or touching it with any part of their body or equipment is a fault.
  • Entry into the non-volley zone is allowed when not volleying.

Line Calls:

  • Any ball touching a line is "in," except for a serve touching the non-volley zone line, which is a fault.

Faults:

  • Any rule violation stopping play.
  • A receiving team fault results in a point for the serving team.
  • A serving team fault results in loss of serve or side-out.

Forfeits:

  • 10-minute grace period before a game is considered a forfeit.
  • Two forfeits in a season may result in removal from the schedule without a refund.
  • To submit a foreit form click here.

Forfeit Notification:

  • Complete the forfeit form to notify the league.
  • Advance notice helps inform opponents and prevent unnecessary travel.

Code of Conduct:

  • The Good Game Leagues Participant Code of Conduct applies to all participants.
